Prayer Shawl Ministry
The Prayer Shawl ministry at Bethany UMC began in 2007. Since that time, members of Bethany and their extended family have made over 400 shawls to be shared with those in need. Our shawls can be knitted, crocheted, sewn, or woven. In colder months, we have blessed fleece throws and quilts. Members of the church who do not do handwork often donate money to those who do the work to help with the expense of the yarn/fabric. This is truly a joint effort and important ministry at Bethany.
With every shawl, we share a blessing and include a prayer square which can be carried in a purse, placed under a pillow, kept in a Bible. We also include a small clay ornament of Bethany Church made by Pat Morrison. On a Sunday when a prayer shawl has been requested, the shawl is held at the door, and those leaving the service touch the shawl and offer a silent prayer of healing or celebration. The Women of Bethany sponsor this Prayer Shawl ministry as a way to reach out to those in our congregation and community in need of comfort, solace, celebration, and joy.
